ASBMB-UMass Boston partners with the McCormick Middle School, a local underfunded school, where we teach a class of eighth graders general science topics through lecture and laboratory series. Each semester, we meet with them twice- once at their school and once in our new Integrated Sciences Complex. ASBMB outreach members facilitate lectures and experiments with the eighth graders, to promote an interest in science at an early age. In the past, we've performed experiments such as DNA extraction and taught on a variety of topics ranging from thermodynamics to structure and function of small molecules. Outreach also provides an opportunity for college students to teach scientific topics, prepare their own curriculum, and engage young students in the pursuit of science, all while giving back to the community.
